UN Delegation Questions Jamaat on Participation in National Elections

A visiting United Nations (UN) delegation in Dhaka engaged with leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, seeking clarity on whether all political parties would be able to participate in the upcoming national elections. In response, Jamaat's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher stated, "We are not commenting on legal matters favoring or opposing any party. It is for the people, society, and circumstances to decide."

The discussion took place on Monday at the UN offices in Gulshan, with a four-member Jamaat delegation meeting the UN team.

When asked if discussions included the ruling Awami League's participation, Taher clarified, "They [the UN team] asked if everyone could contest. We stated that it depends on public opinion and the prevailing situation. We have no special stance."

Jamaat’s Take on Election Timing and Reforms

Responding to BNP’s demand for elections by July or August, Taher remarked, "BNP, being a major political party, has its perspective. We believe necessary reforms should be enacted promptly to facilitate elections as soon as possible."

On local government elections preceding national polls, Taher said the matter was under review and that Jamaat would announce its position after internal discussions.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue on reforms suggested by various commissions, saying, "Immediate dialogue is essential to reach a consensus on fundamental reforms before preparing for elections. Delaying elections under the pretext of reforms is equally unacceptable."

UN Involvement in Ensuring Fair Elections

Taher disclosed the UN delegation sought Jamaat’s view on UN assistance during elections. He welcomed their involvement, stating, "We appreciate technical and financial assistance but do not support external interference. Transparency measures like installing CCTV cameras at polling stations should be prioritized."

He noted that Jamaat highlighted the need for significant funding to ensure fair elections and expressed support for inclusive, participatory voting.

Key Reform Proposals from Jamaat

Taher underscored the urgency of constitutional and electoral reforms, including:

• Limiting prime ministerial terms to two.
• Balancing powers between the president and prime minister.
• Strengthening the Election Commission for enhanced authority.

Jamaat Delegation Members

The Jamaat delegation, led by Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, included Central Executive Committee Member Saiful Alam Khan, Assistant Secretary-General Ehsanul Mahbub Zobair, and Central Propaganda Secretary Matiur Rahman Akand.

The delegation stressed that reforms without delays and fair practices are crucial to avoiding flawed elections similar to previous instances.
