A young Bangladeshi man was reportedly killed near the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar district following a land dispute involving Indian nationals. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the zero line of the Aoulachhara Basti area in Karmadha Union. The victim, who sustained serious injuries from a machete attack, later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.
The deceased, Ahad Ali (34), was a resident of Aoulachhara Basti and the son of Yunus Ali. His wife, Jamirunnesa, filed a case at Kulaura Police Station around midnight, naming seven individuals, including Indian national Haider Ali, as well as four to five unidentified suspects.
Speaking to the media on Monday morning, Kulaura Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Farhad confirmed the case details. He noted that some of the accused individuals are Bangladeshi nationals. Ahad Ali’s body is currently at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
Dispute Over Land Ownership
According to police and local sources, the incident stemmed from a dispute over land located on the Indian side of the border. Opposite Aoulachhara Basti lies Irani police station under Tripura, India. The victim’s in-laws own land just outside India’s barbed-wire fencing, which was leased to Indian national Haider Ali. Allegedly, Haider had not been making regular payments for the lease, which created ongoing tension between him and Ahad.
On Sunday afternoon, Haider reportedly called Ahad to the border to discuss the matter. During the altercation, Haider and his accomplices attacked Ahad with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. He was initially taken to Kulaura Health Complex and later transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he died en route.
Community Reaction and Investigation
Local Union Parishad Member Sylvester Pathang said that the attack was likely motivated by the land dispute involving Ahad’s in-laws. Residents of the area have echoed similar sentiments.
Following the incident, a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) patrol team visited the scene on Sunday evening. However, attempts to contact the local Murichhara BGB camp for comments were unsuccessful.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend the suspects named in the case.
